In July 2025, China's wind power industry ushered in another important milestone - Envision Energy and Luoyang Bearing Group jointly announced that the 8,000th independently developed and manufactured wind turbine main bearing officially rolled off the production line. This is not only a key step in the full localization of key wind power components in China, but also a sign that my country has broken away from external dependence in the core technology field of wind power equipment and has global competitiveness.

 

Looking back over the past few years, the development of domestic wind turbine main bearings has undergone a huge transformation from scratch, from dependence on imports to independent control. As early as 2019, the main bearings used in the domestic wind power industry almost all relied on overseas brands, which was not only costly, but also limited in the supply chain, seriously affecting the project promotion and equipment operation and maintenance efficiency. Faced with this "neck-stuck" problem, Envision Energy and Luoyang Bearing Group launched in-depth cooperation and opened the road to research and development of domestic main bearings.

 

After years of joint technical research, the two sides gradually mastered the core design and manufacturing process of the main bearings and successfully achieved large-scale production. In 2024, domestic main bearings passed the international IECRE induction hardening certification, further enhancing the recognition of the product in the international market. So far, more than 8,000 main bearings jointly developed by Envision and Luoyang Bearing have been delivered, of which all wind turbines for export use domestic main bearings, demonstrating the solid foundation of Made in China in the global wind power industry chain.

 

Breaking the "black box" and mastering key technologies

 

As one of the most critical transmission components in wind turbines, the main bearing directly affects the operating stability and power generation efficiency of the entire machine. It not only has to withstand huge dynamic loads, but also needs to operate stably for a long time under complex and changing environmental conditions. Due to its high technical threshold, it has long been monopolized by a few foreign companies.

 

"The main bearing is not a simple mechanical structure, but a vital 'joint' in the entire system." Yu Haibo, general manager of Luoyang Bearing, pointed out in an interview, "Its performance is directly related to the service life, maintenance frequency and overall power generation performance of the wind turbine."

 

In order to break the foreign technical barriers, Envision and Luoyang Bearing have carried out systematic research and development around material selection, processing technology, heat treatment technology, detection methods and other links. By optimizing the internal structure of the bearing, improving the lubrication method and introducing a real-time monitoring system, the reliability and durability of the product have been greatly improved.

 

Practical verification, creating a "zero failure" record

 

Since the first domestic main bearing was put into use in 2019, its operating performance has been fully verified. As of now, more than 7,200 Envision wind turbines equipped with domestic main bearings have been operating stably for more than six years worldwide, and no bearing failure accidents have occurred during this period. This achievement is also rare internationally, fully demonstrating the quality and technical strength of domestic products.

 

"We have transformed our systematic understanding of wind turbines into specific needs for bearings, and have truly carried out research and development based on customer needs." Yang Yawen, deputy general manager of Envision Energy's wind power product line, said, "This deep collaboration makes our products not only more performant, but also more in line with actual application scenarios."

 

In addition, Envision also combined 30 years of equivalent working condition simulation test technology to evaluate the fatigue life of the main bearing under extreme conditions, thereby ensuring its stable operation capability under various complex climatic conditions. At the same time, the intelligent monitoring system is also integrated into the bearing design, which can provide real-time feedback on key parameters such as temperature, vibration, and lubrication status, providing data support for later operation and maintenance.

 

From substitution to leadership, the localization rate has increased significantly

 

According to industry data, before 2019, the localization rate of domestic wind power main bearings was less than 10%. Today, this ratio has jumped to about 60%, among which the localization rate of main bearings used by Envision Energy is as high as 80%. This means that domestic main bearings have not only achieved substitution in quantity, but also won wide recognition in the market in terms of quality and service.

 

At the same time, the international market share of Chinese wind power equipment manufacturers is also expanding. According to a report released by Wood Mackenzie, the top three global wind power installed capacity in 2024 will be taken by Chinese companies for the first time, namely Goldwind Technology, Envision Energy and Mingyang Smart Energy. In addition, the new orders of Chinese companies in overseas markets increased by more than 50% year-on-year, showing strong international competitiveness.

 

Looking to the future: Towards a higher level of manufacturing

 

As the "14th Five-Year Plan" draws to a close, the "15th Five-Year Plan" blueprint is in the works. Driven by the "dual carbon" goal, wind power, as an important part of clean energy, will usher in greater development space. This also puts higher requirements on the production capacity, quality and intelligence level of core components.

 

Luozhou said that the company plans to comprehensively improve its manufacturing capabilities and management level in the next five years, with the goal of achieving 15 billion yuan in operating income by 2030. To this end, the company will continue to increase investment in intelligent manufacturing, digital factory construction and other aspects to create a more competitive wind power supporting system.
