China Shenyang Blower Works Powers World-Scale Ethylene Facility with Domestically-Produced Core Technology

On July 1, as China and Saudi Arabia were about to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, good news came from the highly anticipated Sino-Saudi Gulei Ethylene Project: the core power equipment of the project, the ultra-large cracking gas compressor independently developed by Shenyang Blower Group, was successfully delivered and installed at the Fujian Gulei Petrochemical Base, marking that the Sino-Saudi Gulei Ethylene Project has fully entered the equipment installation stage. This heavy equipment, known as the "heart of the dragon head", once again witnessed the acceleration of Shenyang Blower Group's development of my country's major equipment core technologies from "following" to "running side by side" and moving towards "leading".

As a key project of China-Saudi Arabia capacity and investment cooperation and the third batch of major national foreign investment projects, the China-Saudi Arabia Gulei Ethylene Project has a total investment of 44.8 billion yuan. It is an important practice of the deep connection between the "Belt and Road" initiative and Saudi Arabia's "Vision 2030". The project is expected to be completed and put into production in 2026, when it will have an annual production capacity of 1.5 million tons of ethylene, up to 1.8 million tons, setting a new record for the annual production capacity of ethylene plants worldwide. It will not only drive an investment scale of nearly 200 billion yuan in the upstream and downstream, but will also effectively reduce my country's dependence on foreign high-end chemical products, meet the market and customer demand for high-end chemical products, and have important strategic significance for ensuring national energy security and stabilizing the industrial chain supply chain.

The ethylene plant is the leader of the entire Zhongsha Gulei ethylene project, and the ethylene "three machines" independently developed by Shenyang Blower Group for the project can be said to be the "heart" of this leader. Among them, the cracking gas compressor hoisted this time is the engine that allows the "high-temperature cracking gas" to circulate smoothly during the production process of the plant. It is also the core hub for transporting production raw materials to the downstream separation system. It is the "lifeline" and "energy center" for the smooth operation of the entire "leading device". It is worth mentioning that this "Chinese heart" with a total weight of more than 600 tons is composed of thousands of parts, and its assembly accuracy is as high as 0.005 mm, which is equivalent to one twentieth of the thickness of an A4 paper.

As the "food" of the petrochemical industry, the core of its production equipment - cracking gas compressors, propylene compressors and ethylene compressors - has long relied on imports. Through independent research and development, Shenyang Blower has successfully achieved a breakthrough in the localization of 800,000 tons, 1.2 million tons to 1.5 million tons of ethylene "three machines" since it successfully developed 240,000 tons/year ethylene "three machines" in 1998. This sprint to a new height of 1.8 million tons/year of ethylene "three machines" not only means the enlargement of equipment size, but also further overcomes a series of technical difficulties such as efficiency improvement, structural strength, safety and reliability. Through the successful development of key equipment for the ultra-large ethylene unit of the Zhongsha Gulei project, Shenyang Blower Group has solved more than a dozen large-scale derivative problems such as rotor dynamics stability under ultra-high pressure conditions and high Mach number impeller aerodynamic design. The successful development of the cracking gas compressor of this project once again verified Shenyang Blower's full-process independent innovation capabilities in the field of ultra-large petrochemical equipment.
