Dry Double Clutch Transmission from LuK(Jan 11,2011)
Just a few months ago, the automotive industry was reeling from the impact of the global economic crisis. Now the upturn is making itself felt. Nevertheless, drivers are again facing gas price increases. So it comes as no surprise that vehicles offering a high level of driving pleasure and comfort while actively reducing fuel consumption are in great demand among end consumers. With its numerous innovative components, Schaeffler is making significant contributions in this respect. For example, the dry double clutch transmission from it´s LuK brand is a decisive step towards improved energy efficiency with reduced fuel consumption and lower emissions. The double clutch transmission with dry clutches became popular at the beginning of 2008 through its spectacular volume production start in Europe. Last year the break-through was also achieved in North America. Its installation as an automatic transmission in the new Ford Fiesta started in the first half of 2010 – and today, the transmission is well established in the marketplace. The double clutch transmission was impressive from the very start with significant benefits in terms of efficiency and consumption. Currently used in automated transmissions up to the mid torque range, the dry double clutch represents a technological solution whereby, both fuel consumption and emissions are reduced while easily meeting the increasing demands for safety, comfort and driving dynamics. Moreover, there is nothing standing in the way of it being built into progressive hybrid transmissions. Simultaneously with it´s introduction in the USA, the double clutch transmission achieved another milestone in Europe with volume production starting at Fiat and at Renault, in concert with transmission manufacturer Getrag. Both Getrag and Ford are using a special lever actuator developed by LuK. This is an additional, innovative actuating solution to reach the required clutch torque without taking up any significant extra space in the double clutch system. The numbers speak for themselves: Its significant weight-saving properties mean the dry double clutch is a high performance yet efficient product. Compared to conventional automatic transmissions, it enables efficiency improvements of between 5 percent and 15 percent to be achieved. Since an oil cooling system plus correspond-ing hydraulics are no longer required and given the clutch’s impressive efficiency levels, significant fuel savings are achieved — more than 10 percent compared to wet clutche DCT´s and up to 6 percent compared to manual transmissions. The potential reduction in CO2 of between 12 percent and 18 percent is also quite respect-able compared to conventional automatic transmissions. As the first company worldwide to market a double clutch transmission with dry double clutch, LuK’s product portfolio now covers almost the entire double clutch transmission. Here too Schaeffler’s international expertise comes to bear: The transmission has been manufactured in Germany right from the start; production lines in Hungary and China followed later on. The latest production line started up in Mexico a couple of weeks ago.
