SKF Reconditions Centrifuges at Chrome International SA in KZN
Newcastle-based Chrome International SA tasked SKF as sole distributor of the world renowned Hiller range of decanter centrifuges and hydraulic drives throughout Sub-Saharan Africa, with the reconditioning of Viscotherm rotor differentials and the upgrading of electronic controls on three Hiller VS 1000 centrifuges.
David Keen, Manager SKF Centrifuge Repairs, has been working in this field for over 14 years and is also the only Viscotherm factory trained hydraulics drive technician in South Africa. Keen has gained vast experience in diverse industries including water treatment, coal, chemical and plastics both locally and abroad and attended extensive training courses on hydraulic drives, including maintenance, reconditioning and commissioning of centrifuges both at Viscotherm in Switzerland and Hiller in Germany.
Chrome International SA uses the centrifuges for the dewatering of Chrome 6 and Keen explains the application: "The centrifuges separate liquids and solids from bought-in Soda Ash at the rate of 22m3 per hour. The recovered liquid, Chrome 6 (Sodium Dichromate), is sold as a by-product for paint and wood pigment, etc. The solids, known as Sodium Bicarbonate, go through a further drying process where CO2 is also removed to produce Soda Ash which is then reintroduced into the system".
"The fact that the centrifuges, purchased by Chrome International as second hand units over twenty years old, required reconditioning only, is proof of Hiller's excellent reputation for product robustness and reliability", says Keen.
"We received the orders, valued at over R1.1 million in 2006 and delivered the last reconditioned Viscotherm Rotodiff in January 2007," states Keen and adds that the upgrading of the electronic controls is also nearing completion.
Chrome International operates three centrifuges while one spare unit is always kept in good running condition to take over from the other units to keep the facility fully operational during maintenance and refurbishment programmes.
