China-Based Machine Tool Company Introduced Itself to SCV Manufacturers

The U.S. branch of machine tool company, Shenyang Machine Tool Company, held a grand opening event Jan. 22 to introduce itself to local industry after opening a marketing and customer training facility in Santa Clarita in December.
Based in Shenyang, China, SMTCL is a subsidiary of SYMG which produces more than 80,000 machine tools each year. SMTCL has design centers in Germany and China, as well as manufacturing campuses in China and Germany, and is the world’s largest machine tool company but is little known in the U.S., said a spokesperson for the company.
“We’re the only company in the world that manufactures many of the machines and the company has been around a long time,” said Caitlin May, marketing specialist for the firm. “But the company isn’t well known in the U.S.; many have never heard of us so we’re introducing ourselves and building brand awareness.”
The company has a 10-million square foot campus in Shenyang, an American-based headquarters in the City of Industry that opened in 2009; the machine tool company manufactures over 300 products and generated $2.9 billion in sales last year. The company also announced last fall that it is looking to build a factory in the states to serve markets in the U.S., Mexico and Canada.
The Valencia office will be used to introduce new product lines and train SMTCL’s distributors from Wesco International, May said. But it also plans to introduce its products to manufacturers through events to be held at the local office.
The Valencia office serves the Northern Los Angeles County market from Antelope Valley, to San Fernando Valley and Simi Valley, Caitlin said. Its City of Industry office is able to provide support to manufacturers throughout the southern region. Representing the U.S. branch, Chief Operating Officer Jerry McCarty and May are both residents of Santa Clarita. A resident since 1995, McCarty relocated from Detroit.
“SMTCL Americas is here to support the Santa Clarita Valley in the aerospace, automotive, medical, machine shop, and all other manufacturing industries,” McCarty said. “We plan on playing an active role in the community in education and community services.”
