Timken Co. is subleasing space in the Hoover District. An area that once housed Stark State College's non-credit and corporate training programs now is home for Timken's IT staff.
The Hoover District has a new tenant through a sublease agreement struck by Stark State College.
Timken Co. is using space in the complex, carved from an area where Hoover Co. employees once molded parts for vacuum cleaners.
About 75 members of Timken’s IT department have moved to 265 E. Maple St., which previously was used by Stark State’s non-credit and corporate training programs. Timken is subleasing about 20,000 square feet from Stark State.
Timken is using the space to get its IT force closer to the company’s world headquarters on Mount Pleasant Street NW in Jackson Township, said Gloria Irwin, company spokeswoman. The IT workers had been working in downtown Canton.
The company moved its world headquarters to the Jackson Township facility after last summer’s spinoff of TimkenSteel Corp. The building, which initially housed Timken Research, was expanded to accommodate departments that had been housed at Canton locations.
Having IT workers closer to the headquarters affords greater opportunities for collaboration, Irwin said.
Stark State leased the space in 2009, setting up offices, classrooms and laboratories for workforce development and continuing education contract training. But the college reviewed operations and determined it would be more efficient to align its non-credit continuing education courses with similar credit courses, said Marisa Rohn, director for marketing and communications.
Programs that Stark State based in the Hoover District were moved to the main campus or satellite facilities in the area, opening the space for a new tenant. Rohn said the college was pleased to be able to work a sublease agreement with Timken.
