Japanese Company Claims Development of Greaseless Ball Bearings

One Japanese company believes it has put an improved spin on the traditional ball bearing by eliminating the need for lubrication. Coo Space has developed a way to space out the balls in a ball bearing without the use of a cage. With the use of a groove in the outer bearing race, the balls in the Autonomous Decentralized Bearing (ADB) are kept separated. When the balls move over the groove, they are slowed down and eventually sped back up. The change of pace separates the balls if they are touching when passing the groove by forcing the first ball to slow down and hold back the second ball. The process allows the bearing to avoid friction and uneven spacing while at the same time maintaining proper performance. Since the ADB does not require a cage, the bearings do not have to be lubricated. Coo Space has stated that the ADB can experience as little as 10 percent of the friction involved with a regular ball bearing.
