Concrete foundations are set and steel frame is being erected as TimkenSteel Corp. moves forward with its latest project.
The company began construction of a $40 million advanced quench-and-temper facility in late April at the Gambrinus Steel Mill.
Work is being done along the south side of Navarre Road SW adjacent to buildings that house other heat-treat operations.
An area previously used for parking and storage has been cleared and leveled. One section is being dug out to build a retaining pool 25 feet deep that will catch and recycle the water used to cool heated steel bars.
INVESTMENTS TOTAL OVER $500 MILLION
It’s the latest in a string of projects that date to 2006, when the steel operation was part of the Timken Co. Expanding heat-treat operations is the first major project for TimkenSteel, which was spun off from Timken in July 2014.
Work on the building should be finished later this year. Several months will be needed to install the heat-treat equipment.
The facility should be treating steel sometime during summer 2016.
The company opened a continuous thermal treat facility at the Gambrinus mill in 1984. It was built to support and treat product from the Faircrest Steel Mill, which is south of the Gambrinus complex. Timken added other heat-treat lines through the years, allowing the company to broaden its products for steel customers.
Heat-treat, which includes quench and temper, thermal heating and other processes, is an additional service that TimkenSteel offers customers. It’s done to make steel harder and stronger.
The goal is to make steel that meets the demands and tolerance levels set by customers, said Tracey L. Schaeffer, senior manager for special finishing. Offering heat-treat service helps TimkenSteel “make sure that we can keep competitive,” she said.
Steel bars and tubes are loaded onto massive steel tables, then moved into a furnace that heats the metal to temperatures topping 1,600 degrees. The hot steel moves from the furnace into a quenching line. Sprays of water cause the steel’s temperature to drop to less than 200 degrees.
Heating and then quickly cooling the steel changes the metal’s molecular structure.
The company has combined furnaces and quench lines as a continuous process in order to improve efficiency, said Neil J. Nalawadi, program manager for advanced business development.
NEW TECHNOLOGY
Schaeffer said the advanced quench and temper facility will feature new technology and equipment. It’s based on 30 years of work, science and technology developed as the company examined steel and the steel-making process.
TimkenSteel has developed techniques and worked with its machinery and equipment suppliers to improve heat-treat processes, Schaeffer said.
The new building will be 620 feet long, making it twice the length of the two neighboring facilities that house heat-treat operations. The new building will accommodate a longer furnace that allows TimkenSteel to maintain higher production levels, Nalawadi said.
