Successful First-Time Startup of 1.2 MTPA Ethylene Unit for CNPC Guangxi Upgrade
Recently, the 1.2 million tons/year ethylene unit of the PetroChina Guangxi Petrochemical Refining and Chemical Integration Transformation and Upgrading Project successfully started up on its first attempt! In this project, Shenyang Blower Works Group provided all three core compressor units, including the cracked gas compressor unit, the electric-driven ethylene compressor unit, and the propylene compressor unit.

Among them, the electric-drive ethylene compressor unit, as the world's first set of frequency converters to achieve hot standby switching for electric-drive ethylene units, fully demonstrates Shenyang Blower Works' strong R&D capabilities, lays a solid foundation for the electrification of large-scale ethylene plants, and establishes a clear green transformation path for the entire industry through reliable operation. The PetroChina Guangxi Petrochemical Refining and Chemical Integration Transformation and Upgrading Project is a key project of PetroChina's "14th Five-Year Plan" and a crucial project for implementing the national "Belt and Road" initiative, building the Western Land-Sea New Corridor, and participating in RCEP international competition. Based on on-site research and experience summaries from several similar large-scale projects already in operation, and after in-depth analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of electric drive versus steam drive in terms of energy efficiency and carbon emission reduction, the customer ultimately made the crucial decision to adopt the electric drive unit.
Faced with a challenge unprecedented both domestically and internationally, the Shenyang Blower Works (Shenyang Blower) R&D team precisely considered the natural environment of the project site (such as altitude, temperature, and humidity) as well as key boundary conditions such as the power distribution system and load data. They conducted in-depth technical research and solution comparison, creatively adopting a fully redundant configuration. This achieved comprehensive redundancy in the frequency converter, PLC, water cooling system, and excitation system, effectively ensuring that the electric drive system could meet the requirement of continuous operation for five years without shutdown, completely resolving the customer's core concern regarding the reliability of the electric drive system.
